Scania and Volvo HD Power Steering Pump Guide
European HD trucks in North America have specific pump requirements. Learn the OE cross-reference for Scania and Volvo.
What the Driver Feels
- Whine at idle on a European truck
- Heavy steering at low speed
- Leaks at the pump flange
- Pressure below spec
- Contaminated fluid
- Pump noise after service
- Groan at full lock
- Belt slip on cold mornings
What Causes It
While less common than Freightliner/Kenworth in North America, Scania and Volvo HD trucks operate in specialty fleets. Scania DC11/DC12 engines use pump 542001310 or 542001210 producing 21 mL/rev at 16 L/min. Volvo trucks with Cummins engines use pump 542026010. These European pumps are ZF-built and require ZF-spec fluid.
Volvo VNL and VNR trucks sold in North America use either Volvo’s own D13 engine or Cummins ISX. The power steering pump differs. Always confirm by engine and OE number — European parts are less interchangeable than domestic.
How to Inspect
Safety: European trucks use metric fittings — use correct tools.
1. Identify the engine (Scania DC11/DC12 vs Volvo D13 vs Cummins).
2. Test pressure per manufacturer spec.
3. Inspect the pump mounting and belt.
4. Check the reservoir and fluid spec.
5. OE cross: 542001310 (Scania), 542026010 (Volvo/Cummins).
Recommended Repair
- Order the correct pump by OE number — European pumps are not interchangeable.
- Flush with ZF-approved hydraulic fluid.
- Use metric tools to avoid damaging fittings.
- Replace the high-pressure hose.
- Bleed and pressure-test.
