HD Truck Power Steering Fluid: What Spec Do You Need?
Wrong fluid is the #1 cause of premature HD pump failure. Here’s which spec your Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit, or Paccar needs.
What the Driver Feels
- Confusion about which fluid to use
- Pump whine after a fluid change
- Seal leaks after using generic fluid
- Fleet fluid purchasing decisions
- Question about ATF vs hydraulic fluid
- Pump noise after using universal fluid
- Seal swelling or hardening
- Fluid color confusion
What Causes It
HD trucks use different hydraulic fluid specs depending on the engine. Caterpillar requires TO-4 fluid. Cummins requires CES-approved hydraulic fluid. Detroit requires Detroit-approved fluid. Paccar requires Paccar spec. ZF pumps require ZF TE-ML spec. Using the wrong fluid causes seal swelling, foaming, and pump failure within 100,000 miles.
Many shops use universal ‘power steering fluid’ or ATF in HD systems as a shortcut. This works for a while but causes long-term damage. Fleets that use the correct fluid see pump life 2x longer than fleets that cut corners.
How to Inspect
Note: This is a fluid spec guide, not a repair procedure.
1. Check your reservoir cap for the fluid specification.
2. Check your engine service manual for the approved fluid spec.
3. Never use generic ATF or universal power steering fluid in HD systems.
4. When flushing, use the correct spec fluid — don’t mix brands.
5. Store HD hydraulic fluid separately from passenger car ATF to avoid mix-ups.
Recommended Repair
- Caterpillar engines: TO-4 hydraulic fluid.
- Cummins engines: CES 14112 or approved equivalent.
- Detroit Diesel: Detroit-approved hydraulic fluid.
- Paccar engines: Paccar-approved hydraulic fluid.
- ZF pumps: ZF TE-ML spec hydraulic fluid.
