Power Steering Pump Noise

Caterpillar C15 Power Steering Pump Failure Symptoms

The Cat C15 and 3406E power steering pump is a known wear item on Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Freightliner trucks. Here’s what to watch for.

What the Driver Feels

  1. Whine or growl from the pump on cold startup
  2. Heavy steering at low RPM (idle in parking lots)
  3. Visible leaks at the pump mounting flange
  4. Pressure below spec on test (typically 1,500 PSI min)
  5. Fluid contamination with metal particles
  6. Pump pulley wobble or belt slip
  7. Steering box response feels delayed
  8. Whine that worsens in cold weather

What Causes It

The Caterpillar C15 and 3406E use a gear- or vane-type power steering pump mounted on the engine front gear train. On Peterbilt 379 and Kenworth W900 trucks, the pump runs constantly at engine speed and produces 16-28 L/min at 150 bar. After 300,000 miles, the pump gears wear and internal pressure drops, making low-speed steering heavy.

The C15 Acert variant (used in Kenworth T660/T800 and Freightliner Coronado) has a higher-output pump (EV221615L101) that produces 16 L/min at 145 bar. Common failure points are the shaft seal and the flow control valve. Fleets that neglect fluid changes see pump failures 50% earlier.

How to Inspect

Safety: The Cat C15 runs at high oil temperatures. Let the engine cool before disconnecting any hydraulic lines.

1. Check the pump mounting bolts — vibration can loosen them on C15 engines.

2. Inspect the pump shaft seal for wetness at the pulley side.

3. Install a 3,000 PSI gauge and test at idle (600 RPM) and at 1,500 RPM.

4. Check the suction line from the reservoir — collapsed lines cause cavitation noise.

5. Cross-reference OE number: PEV251615R101 (CW), PEV251615L101 (CCW), EV221615L101 (C15 Acert).

Recommended Repair

  1. Replace with an OE-equivalent pump (ZF, TRW, or Cardone HD reman).
  2. Always flush the reservoir, hoses, and cooler before installing.
  3. Use the correct HD hydraulic fluid — Cat spec TO-4 or equivalent.
  4. Replace the high-pressure hose if the old fluid shows metal particles.
  5. Bleed thoroughly: cycle the wheel lock-to-lock with engine off, then run and repeat. Check for leaks after 500 miles.
