HD Power Steering Pump Cross-Reference Guide
Same pump, different part numbers from ZF, TRW, Cardone, and OE. Here’s how to cross-reference and buy the right pump.
What the Driver Feels
- Confusion between OE and aftermarket numbers
- Different prices for the same pump
- Trying to match a Cardone number to a ZF OE
- Not sure if reman or new is the right choice
- Comparing brands for a fleet order
- Wondering if a cheaper pump will fit
- Cross-referencing for a warranty claim
- Building a parts inventory list
What Causes It
HD power steering pumps are made by a few OEMs (ZF, TRW, Ross) and sold under many part numbers. The same pump might be OE #542 0172 10 from Detroit Diesel, #14-20891-000 from Freightliner, and #PEV251615L101 from the aftermarket. Cross-referencing saves money — you can buy the cheaper aftermarket equivalent that fits the same truck.
Reputable reman brands (Cardone HD, TRW reman, ZF reman) pressure-test every pump. Budget no-name reman pumps skip testing and fail early. For fleets, the premium for a tested reman pump pays for itself in reduced downtime.
How to Inspect
Note: Always verify cross-references with your VIN or old pump OE number.
1. Record the OE number off the old pump before removal.
2. Cross-reference using the manufacturer’s catalog or an online cross-reference tool.
3. Compare specs: displacement (mL/rev), max pressure (bar), flow (L/min), rotation (CW/CCW).
4. Check mounting pattern and port sizes match.
5. Buy from a reputable supplier that offers a warranty.
Recommended Repair
- Always cross-reference by OE number, not just truck model.
- Compare specs (displacement, pressure, flow, rotation) — they must match exactly.
- Buy reman from reputable brands (Cardone HD, ZF, TRW) — not no-name.
- Fleets should negotiate volume pricing with a supplier.
- Keep old cores for return credit.
