Parking-Lot Effort on Tundra / 4Runner – Rack Boot, Fluid Level & Pump Pressure

Parking-lot effort is the magnifying glass of a hydraulic steering system: at walking speed, with no tire speed to help, the pump and rack are asked for everything. A Tundra or a 4Runner with hydraulic power steering from the factory is an excellent witness here, since both run an engine-bay reservoir, a conventional pump and a rack, and the complaints that show up first at a parking-lot crawl are exactly the ones to chase. High effort in the lot that goes away on the highway points at low fluid, a torn rack boot that has let a seal leak develop, or a pump that cannot hold pressure at low rpm. This guide orders those checks from cheapest to priciest.
