Stiff Steering After Cold Start – Viscosity, Contamination & Pump Wear
A steering wheel that is stiff for the first minute or two of driving on a cold morning is a classic hydraulic-system complaint, and it usually points at fluid and pump condition rather than the rack. Cold fluid is thick, and thick fluid flows slowly through narrow hoses and a pump that is already spinning slowly at idle, so the system builds assist late. When the fluid is also old, burnt or contaminated, the delay gets worse, and when the pump vanes are worn, the system may stay heavy well into the drive. A Tundra left out in winter or a high-mileage 4Runner with an old reservoir will show this before anything else. The fix is often a flush and a fluid change, but a pump that never fully recovers needs testing before the rack is blamed.
