Power Steering Pump Noise

RAV4 EPS Knock – Motor Bearing & Column Rattle

Overview

A knock or rattle from the steering column in a Toyota RAV4 with electric power steering is usually not a hydraulic pump at all, because these vehicles have no pump, no hoses and no fluid. Instead, the assist comes from an electric motor bolted directly to the column, and the knock owners feel through the wheel comes from motor bearings, a flex coupling inside the column or a loose intermediate-shaft U-joint. The noise is most often a light metallic knock or tick on low-speed parking turns and on small bumps. High-mileage examples, including ten-year-plus RAV4s, wear these parts on a schedule similar to the Toyota Prius and Toyota Corolla, and the diagnosis is almost always mechanical rather than electrical.

Common Symptoms of an EPS Knock on RAV4

  1. A soft metallic knock or tick felt through the steering wheel when turning slowly in a parking lot.
  2. The noise repeats over small bumps, expansion joints and driveway lip entries.
  3. The knock is present with the engine on, and changes when the EPS assist is active.
  4. The steering wheel has a small amount of free play before assist kicks in.
  5. The rattle is louder on cold mornings and softens once the interior warms up.
  6. A faint whine or hum comes from behind the dash while the wheel is turning.
  7. The knock changes pitch when the wheel is held stationary and rocked back and forth.
  8. No warning light is on, and the car steers normally apart from the noise.

Root Causes

  • Wear in the EPS motor bearings that allows the armature to knock inside the gearbox.
  • A worn column flex coupling or torsion sensor isolator that lets the shaft move.
  • Loose intermediate-shaft U-joint splines between column and rack.
  • A worn steering column bearing that allows the shaft to lift and drop.
  • Loose column mounting bolts or a cracked trim shroud that amplifies small vibrations.
  • A worn rack pinion coupler that transfers road noise straight up the column.

Inspection & Diagnosis Tips

  • Start by confirming the noise is column-borne: rock the wheel with the engine off and feel for play at the U-joint under the dash.
  • With the engine running, gently turn the wheel left and right just off center while listening behind the steering column trim.
  • Use a long extension as a stethoscope on the column shaft, intermediate shaft and rack input to localize the knock.
  • Check the column mounting bolts and the intermediate-shaft pinch bolt for looseness.
  • Inspect the U-joint for rust, dry grease and visible angular play when the shaft is held.
  • Compare the noise with a known good RAV4 drive cycle if possible, since EPS hum is normal at low assist.
  • Safety note: with the driver's airbag module mounted in the wheel, do not pry at the column trim without disconnecting the battery and waiting the recommended time, and never lean on the airbag harness.

Replacement & Buying Tips

  • On most RAV4 EPS knocks the column bearing or flex coupling is the fix, not the whole assist motor.
  • If the motor bearing is confirmed worn, a remanufactured EPS column assembly is usually the practical route.
  • Always send the VIN when ordering EPS parts, because motor output and shaft spline differ by model year and market.
  • Check whether the intermediate shaft U-joint is sold separately; replacing just the joint often cures the rattle.
  • After any column work, confirm the steering angle sensor is still centered before road testing.
  • Inspect the rack pinion boot and inner tie rods while the column is open to avoid a second trip.
